The International Consortium for Refugees in Iran (ICRI) has been operating in Iran since 1993 providing a variety of services to local and international NGOs as well as to local civil society institutions. It has cultivated close relationships with UN agencies in Iran and has made strides in bridging the gap that exists in the relationships and understanding between Iranian and refugee organizations and the international community at large

The services ICRI provided over the past decade include facilitation, coordination, solocitations and general support to the international NGOs and donors that came into Iran during the course of many crises. It has also worked with local and refugee organizations in capacity building and advocacy.

With the fall of the Saddam regime in Iraq and the near completion of the repatriation programme for Afghans the stance of the Government of Iran has shifted to a focus on projects that encourage refugee repatriation

Although 2004 was one of ICRIs most fruitful years that included activities in Bam, the translation of the SPHERE handbook into Farsi and a very successful capacity building project, nevertheless difficulties and obstacles in securing permits for continued operations created a situation where ICRI deemed a cessation of its activities unavoidable - and therefore ceased operations in Iran from August 15, 2004.

The Executive Committee and members of ICRI remain steadfast in their commitment to Iran, the refugee issue in Iran as well as to capacity building for the civil society of the region.ICRI will continue its dialogue with its partners and looks forward to being able to resume operations in Iran in line with its mission statement in the future
